Established by Nat White in 1975, the Main Ridge Estate vineyard and winery is located in a secluded bush valley, set high in the famed ancient volcanic terroir of Red Hill wine country. The vineyard enjoys a north-easterly aspect, nurtured on 3 sides by the bays and roaring Bass Strait. Salty winds cool the vines and create premium growing conditions for our treasured vines.
Since 2015 James Sexton has sustained the estate’s rich heritage of premium Estate and Single Vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay winemaking. As a Bachelor of Wine Science from Charles Sturt University and sommelier, his knowledge combined with his gentle and nurturing approach, ensure our wines embody the individual site expression of our vineyards – from soil, to vine, to wine.
New directions
In recent years, Main Ridge Estate has carefully expanded production to include fruit from other small Main Ridge vineyards, owned by neighbours and friends. We intend to remain a small, premium winemaker and be heavily involved in the viticultural management on all these sites. Our goal is to offer a more diverse range of single vineyard wines, which reflect the terroir of each site through the lens of the Main Ridge Estate winery. Having diversified vineyard sites will also support the long-term viability of Main Ridge Estate, given the continuing impacts that erratic climate conditions are having on grape production.
This journey began with the 2021 release of our neighbouring Trueman Vineyard wines and now continues with the 2023 Harvey Vineyard Pinot Noir. Close friend and Melbourne hospitality veteran, Ros Harvey, planted this picturesque 5-acre vineyard in 2017, in a secluded valley on the lower slopes of Main Ridge. Warm, sandy soil temperatures are regulated by the coastal breezes, that flow from the panaromic aspect of Port Phillip Bay, allowing for the retention of bright youthful fruit characters in these young and exciting vines.

- Like many Mornington Peninsula wineries we have suffered adverse weather conditions during the Spring flowering over the past 5 years, causing poor fruit-set and in turn low yields.
- The small levels of production means wine stock levels are very low, and we have had to impose purchase limits and restrict trade sales.
