Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier

We are pleased to announce the release of the 2017 Main Ridge Estate Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Tasting notes and extracts of early reviews of all the 2017 Vintage are provided below. Please note we are not releasing an 2017 Merlot as the cool conditions did not allow satisfactory aromatic ripening of the grapes.

Tasting Notes and Recent Reviews – 2017 Vintage

2017 Chardonnay

Alc. 13.3 %, pH 3.47 , T.A. 5.90 , Picked 11th, 12th & 19th of April

White peach, maraschino, cream, lifted by pink grapefruit and musk through the finish. A fine line of acidity drives through firm phenolic grip. A relatively restrained style of Chardonnay that reflects the cool conditions seen in 2017.

“Change of owner/ winemaker but no change in style….in short it’s excellent…the finish – the more I look at it – is quite exceptional”.
Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, 95 points

“A thorough-bred. Generosity that keeps on giving. Toasted hazelnut, nectarine syrup and other stone fruit and beautifully nestled oak”.
Ned Goodwin MW, 94 points.

2017 Pinot Meunier

Alc – 12.8%, pH. 3.54, T.A. 5.75g/L, picked 13th of April

This is typical of this varietals delicate nature, pale in colour, but lacking nowhere else. Wonderful interplay of delicate red fruits and dark spices make for a remarkably complex wine.

“Totally charming,…fresh, juicy young red…lightly spicy bouquet of raspberries, cherries and strawberries. It’s long and gentle…culminating in a soft but refreshing finish.” Jeremy Oliver, 93 points

2017 ‘Half Acre’ Pinot Noir

Alc. 14.2%, pH 3.35, T.A. 6.2g/l, Picked 13th – 17th April

Long, slow ripening has taken the ‘Half Acre’ block into a realm of dark brooding fruit, joined with earthy truffle and coffee aromas. Structure is telling of a wine that has more to give and will reward those who cellar.

“There is thrilling energy across this wine, with chiffon tannins welded effortlessly to taut acidity….. Persimmon, orange zest and strawberry high tones. An ethereal floating world across the palate. Will age superbly.”. Ned Goodwin MW, 95 points.

“An excellent pinot noir of verve and regionality…first class purity and definition” Jeremy Oliver, 96 points

2017 ‘The Acre’ Pinot Noir

Alc, 13.5%, pH 3.28, T.A 6.05g/l, Picked 6th – 9th April

Young and vibrant. The nose is all florals and spice, raspberry, violet, juniper. Powerful tannins will soften with time giving way to complexity and length.

“Kumquat, orange rind, root spice and a sluice of tamarind acidity meshed with edgy tannins, toning it all into an energetic whole. This opens up beautifully as the oak settles in around the seams, capturing the diaphanous essence of pinot. A wine for lovers of Burgundy”. Ned Goodwin MW 96 points
